Los estadounidenses Harvey Alter y Charles Rice y el británico Michael Houghton ganaron el Premio Nobel de Medicina por el descubrimiento del virus de la hepatitis C, anunció el jurado en Estocolmo.

Fueron galardonados por “su decisiva contribución a la lucha contra esta hepatitis, un importante problema de salud mundial, que causa cirrosis y cáncer de hígado”, explicó el jurado del Nobel.
Los estudios metódicos de la hepatitis asociada a transfusiones realizados por Harvey J. Alter demostraron que un virus desconocido era una causa común de hepatitis crónica; mientras que Michael Houghton utilizó una estrategia no probada para aislar el genoma del nuevo virus que se denominó virus de la hepatitis C; y Charles M. Rice, proporcionó la evidencia final que muestra que el virus de la hepatitis C por sí solo podría causar hepatitis.
